Pennsylvania keeps moving forward with robust revenue growth

With a new state-wide increase in January, the momentum the Pennsylvania gambling environment has experienced over the last year has carried over into 2023.

The region's Gaming Control Board has announced that income from slot machine, table game, sports wagering, igaming, video gaming terminals, and fantasy contests concluded the first month of the year at $464.48m. This comes after celebrating the achievement of another record year over the last month. This is an increase of 18.15% from last year's $393.14m.

All gambling and fantasy competitions together produced $188.32 million in tax revenue in January.

Hollywood Casino at Penn National tops the field overall with revenue of $71.83 million, a 25.44 percent YoY increase from the $57.26 million reported the year before.

Valley Forge Casino Resort came in second with a month-over-month increase of 33.17 percent to $67.87 million (2021: $50.97 million), while Parx Casino closed out the top three with a 7.03 percent increase to $55.46 million (2021: $51.81 million).

Igaming made up $133.11 million of the aforementioned headline amount, an increase of 22.91 percent YoY from $108.31 million.

The highest portion, $90.2 million, came from online slots, up 25.57 percent from $71.83 million, while table games saw a 20.97 percent gain to $40 million (2021: $33 million). Poker online lost $14.55 million to $2.89 million (2021: $3.39 million).

With $55 million in revenue for the month, Hollywood Casino at Penn National finished far ahead of Valley Forge's $29.68 million and Rivers Casino Philadelphia's $28.51 million.

When examining certain game types throughout the course of the year, retail slots continue to be the dominant force with revenue of $202.24 million, up 20.07 percent from the $168.44 million made a year earlier. Retail table games brought in $83.91 million at the closing, a 7.27 percent increase above $78.22 million.

The total sports betting handle for the month was $772.28 million, a 2.7% decrease from the $793.72 million handled in the prior year. 2021: $31.16 million in revenue, an increase of 22.01 percent.

Sales from video gaming terminals increased to $3.34 million, up 7.92% YoY from $39.8 million, while revenue from fantasy competitions decreased by 9.49% to $2.61 million (2021: $2.89 million).
